Gert Fisher

January 13, 1931 — July 18, 2020

Gertrude Kitchen Fisher, age 89 of Cherryville, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Peak Resources.  She was born January 13, 1931 in Transylvania County, NC, a daughter of the late Loren Kitchen, Sr. and Polly Price Kitchen.  She graduated from Brevard High School, Blanton Business College, and Gaston College, and she attended Sacred Heart.  Mrs. Fisher was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she served several terms on the church council and was past president of the Women of the Church.  She was also a member and past matron of Cherryville Chapter 156 Order of the Eastern Star, member and past president of Cherryville Lion’s Club, and was “Lion of the Year” in 1995.  Gertrude was a certified professional secretary and retired from Carolina Freight after 25 years where she was an executive secretary to Mr. Grier Beam.   She also joined the board of directors for C. Grier Beam Truck Museum and spent 7 years as the director of the Museum.  She was a former vice chair on Gaston County Travel and Tourism Board.  Gert served 12 years on Cherryville City Council and was mayor pro-tem for two years.  She served six years on the Gaston County Board of Social Services on appointment of Gov. Jim Hunt and was chairman for one year.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Fisher; and brothers, Gene, Harry, and Loren Kitchen, Jr.

Survivors include her son, Barry (Theresa) Summey of Georgia; grandsons, Kenneth (Julie) Summey, George (Cheryl) Summey, and Jonas Summey of Georgia; great granddaughters, Olivia, Addyson, and Tessa Summey; step great-grandchildren, Jacob, Taylor, and Samantha Phinney; very special friend, Mark Dutton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private burial will take place at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Ben Kifer officiating.
