Samuel Marshall Sigmon, 89, of Delview Rd., died August 5, 2010 at Kings Mountain Hospice House.

Sam was born in Caldwell Co. on July 5, 1921,  a son of the late Robert Shaver and Mary Ethel Guthrie Sigmon. He was a retired barber with 48 years of service, veteran of World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Mr. Sigmon was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church , former Deacon, and longtime chairman of the Property Committee. He was also well known in the area as a premier softball player and pitcher for many years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Sue Hoover Sigmon in 2005, twin great grandsons Jay and Trey Greene, brothers Walter, Powell, William, and Leonard Sigmon and two sisters Shirley Kenley and Daisy Furr.

Survivors include his daughter and son in law Pat and Eddie Greene of Shelby, grandchildren Laura Turner and husband Chris of Edenton and Kevin Greene and wife Dee of Cherryville, and great grandchildren Amy and Amanda Turner and Kaylee and Marshall Greene.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 PM at First Baptist Church with Dr. Vince Hefner officiating with burial in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday at Carpenter’s Funeral Home from 6-8 PM and at other times at the home of Kevin and Dee Greene, 119 Henry Putnam Dr., Cherryville.
