Robert Lee Carpenter, Sr., age 83, of 315 Harrelson Road, died April 3, 2011 at Peak Resources.  Mr. Carpenter was born February 4, 1928 the son of Barney Carroll and Gettie Upton Carpenter.  He was a U.S. Army / Navy Veteran of WWII, a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a sheet metal worker for McArthur Tin Shop in Shelby and was  a retired dock worker from Carolina Freight Carriers.
 
 
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margie Beam, and Patsie Ruth Carpenter.
 
Survivors include his wife Merle Dellinger Carpenter of the home, a son Bob L. Carpenter, Jr. and wife Cherri Self Carpenter , of Cherryville, a daughter Sharon Smiley and husband Phillip Smiley, grandchildren Michael Carpenter and wife Brenda of Richmond Va., Lisa Carpenter of Lewisville, Tx., Wesley Brown and wife Dorothy, of Cherryville,  three great grandchildren, Jenny Rebecca Brown, Chloe Carpenter, Sophie Carpenter, two brothers, Ben Carpenter and John Carpenter, both of Cherryville, one sister, Kathleen Burgess of Bessemer City.
 
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 4:00 PM at Carpenter’s Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Key and Rev. Jerry Lail officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the services.  The  family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.  The burial will be private.
 
In Lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 112 Mt. Zion  Church Road, Cherryville,  or Second Baptist Church,  202 North Houser Street, Cherryville, NC
