Mr. Hubert Lenwood Grimsley, 83, of 102 Harbor View Drive, died January 3, 2009 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

He was born on May 13, 1925 in Florence Co. S.C. a son of the late Lonnie Grimsley and Bertie Wilkes Grimsley. Mr. Grimsley was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church, Veteran of the US Navy with the rank of Gunner Mate 3rd Class, POW in Japan and a Purple Heart recipient, He worked in the oil fields in Iran and Iraq in the 50‘s and 60’s, and was a retired Brick Mason having worked with Dixon Construction and Bob Pruett Masonry.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mae Self Gordon Grimsley in 1990, a sister Dorothy Turner and son-in-law Roger Avant.

He is survived by his longtime companion and caregiver Frances Paige and her son David Wayne Paige, sons, Walter “Binky” Grimsley and wife Rachel, of North Charleston, S.C. Terry Grimsley and Teresa, of Timmonsville, S.C., daughter Janice Avant of Coward, SC brothers Lonnie “Junior” Grimsley and wife Effie, of Scranton, SC Donald Grimsley and wife Sara of Marion, and Paul Grimsley of Coward, SC, sisters Lazette Morris and husband Edward and Margaret Strickland both of Coward, SC four grandchildren, Richard Avant and wife Brenda, Sharon Villanueva and husband Francisco, Timmy Grimsley and wife Denna, Chris Grimsley and wife Jennifer, all of Coward, SC and eight great grandchildren Ryan Avant, Jessica Avant, Rocky Avant, Michael Grimsley, Matthew Grimsley, Austin Grimsley and Bailey Grimsley, all of Coward, SC. Two very special nieces, Beverly von der Lippe and Janet Clary.

Funeral services will be held Monday at Carpenter’s Funeral Home at 2 PM with Rev. Max Turner officiating with burial to follow in Gaston Memorial Park with military honors by American Legion Post #243. The family will receive friends Monday from noon -1:45 PM at the Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
