Hattie Bess Boggs, 96 went to be with Lord and Savior on March 27, 2009.  She was born in Cherryville on June 18, 1912, to the late John William and Eliza Little McDowell Kendrick.  She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Cherryville and was the organist there for 35 years.  Mrs. Boggs was a 1933 graduate of the Women’s College, known now as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  She received a BS degree in music and a certificate in elementary education.  Mrs. Boggs taught school for 36 years primarily in Lincoln County and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Teachers Society.  Mrs. Boggs was a gifted pianist and organist.  Love of God, church, family and education were the hallmarks of her life.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Boggs was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Robert Wayne Boggs, in 1974.  She was the second to the youngest of four sisters and two brothers, all deceased.  She is survived by three daughters: Harriet Kendrick Boggs Mulvey and Husband, John of Lexington, S. C., Waynell Boggs Morris of Chapel Hill, N. C., Janet Boggs Arthurs and husband, Doug of Gastonia, N. C., and six grandchildren: Mark Mulvey and wife, Stephanie of Cherryville, N. C., Matthew Mulvey and wife, Emily of Springfield, VA., Jennifer Arthurs Grant and husband, George of Chatham, N. J., Jason Arthurs of Raleigh, N. C., Brandon Arthurs of Jacksonville, Fla., and Scott Morris of Chapel Hill, N. C.. She is also survived by four great grandchildren: Cameron and George Grant, Kate and Jack Mulvey.

The family would like to thank the staff of Covenant Village where Mrs. Boggs lived for 14 years.  They would also like to thank her private caregivers for their loving care: Mary Beard, Helen Blake, Marie Armstrong, Naomi Davis and Bonnie Johnson.  A special thanks is give to Mary Beard for her love and devotion to Mrs. Boggs for the past 6 years.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Cherryville, NC. Burial will follow in the City Memorial Cemetery, Cherryville, The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 2:45 at the church, at other time at the home of Janet Arthurs, 1230 Lochshire Lane, Gastonia, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 301 East First Street, Cherryville, NC  28021.
