Harold “Fungo” Carpentr, 85, of 117 South Pink St. died Thursday April 23, 2009. He was born March 24, 1924 in Cherryville a son of the late Clayton H. and Sarah Leila Lankford Carpenter.

Harold was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he served as sexton for 33 years. He was retired from Carolina Freight Carriers after 30 years of service, former member of Cherryville Fire Dept from 1954-1979. Fungo was a member of Masonic Lodge 505 AF &AM, and was recognized for 56 years of faithful service to Cherryville High School Football for being down marker of the chain gang.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Hubert, Everette, Lloyd, Troy, Colon, Fred, and Max Carpenter, Sisters Connie Watterson and Ruby Shumate and foster brothers Lander Carpenter and L.C. Ford

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Hallman Carpenter, daughter and son-in-law Debra and Robert Hord, son and daughter-in-law Kermit and Julie Carpenter all of Cherryville, and two grandchildren Lesley Mills of Charlotte and Kyle Carpenter of Cherryville.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at St. John‘ s Lutheran Church at 3 PM with Rev. Dr. Robert Allen, Rev. Harold Skinner and Rev. Mike Collins officiating with burial to follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday at Carpenter’s Funeral Home from 1:30-2:30 PM and at other times a the home.
