George William Hill, Sr. of Cherryville, North Carolina
George William Hill, age 83, died on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, December 30, 2010, in the chapel at Carpenters Funeral Home in Cherryville, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Hill was born July 22, 1927 in Mooresville, NC. He was the son of George Eli and Bertie Simmons Hill. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Carpenter Hill. He was a member of the Army Air Corps and a veteran of World War II. He graduated with a Juris Doctor of Law Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1954.
He retired from the Gaston County Solicitors Office in 1987 after 25 years of service. After his retirement, George practiced law in Cherryville and worked as a magistrate. He later worked for the Gaston County Clerk of Court.
Mr. Hill enjoyed wood carving, especially birds, cooking and spending time with his friends, family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching sports. He especially enjoyed watching his beloved Tarheels play basketball.
Mr. Hill is survived by his special friend, Glenda J. Monk of Cherryville; a brother, Hugh Gray Hill (Willie) of Kernersville, NC; a son, George W. Hll, Jr. (Lillian) of Fayetteville, NC; a daughter, Louise Hill Newton (Charles) of Lexington, SC; a daughter, Kathy Hill Faires (Bob) Seneca, SC; and six grandchildren.
