Christine Mauney Cadwallader passed away on Sept 9, 2010 under hospice care in Blacksburg, Virginia, where her daughter and granddaughter reside. Mrs. Cadwallader passed after a stroke without discomfort and with family by her bedside.
Christine Cadwallader was born in Cherryville, North Carolina on July 11, 1922. Her parents were the late Ethel Black Mauney and the late Sylvanus Mauney, her siblings (all deceased) included brothers Everett, Lawrence, and John Mauney and sister Gertrude Mauney.
Christine married the late John “Johnny” Kenneth Cadwallader in May 1946. She served in the United States Air Force during World War II, worked at Carolina Freight and retired from Gaston County Public Schools, where she worked as a secretary. Christine is survived by her children Christine Burton and John Kenneth Cadwallader, Jr. and his wife Rebecca, and by her grandchildren Maggie Doolan (Dennis), Samantha Henley (Boe), Katico Cadwallader, Jerimiah Cadwallader, and Savannah Cadwallader. She also has four great grandchildren, Johnny Doolan, age 7, Rhodi Matthews, age 3, Christine Doolan, 14 months, Levi Logan, 5 months, and a fifth great grandchild is due in January of 2011.
Christine was a dedicated parent and grandparent and a conscientious and loyal friend. She attended First Baptist Church regularly all of her life and participated in church trips and activities.. She lived in Pittsburgh for a brief period after her marriage but returned to Cherryville with her husband, nicknamed “Yankee” by their Cherryville friends, and the couple raised their children in Cherryville. After Johnny passed away in 1979, she maintained close relationships with her husband’s relatives for the rest of her life.
Christine was very active and productive. She walked every morning for over 40 years and enjoyed good physical health all her life. While her children were young she loved attending dances at Club Carolina and dancing the foxtrot with her husband. Her mother, Ethel, a beloved member of the community, lived with the family. She enjoyed vacations to the beach in the family camper, as well as bus trips with friends after the loss of her husband. She was an avid reader and socialized daily. She was proud of her venture into military service and grateful for the experience and perspective her service provided her. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Teen also loved her Cherryville community and her long-time friends there. She will be greatly missed by her family, extended family, and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 AM at First Baptist Church with Dr. Vince Hefner officiating with burial in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 PM at Carpenter’s Funeral Home.
