David Benjamin “Benny” Blanton, 79, of 2057 Eaker Dr., died September 13, 2011 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Benny was born June 10, 1932 in Spindale, NC a son of the late Robert L. and Ollie G. Hamrick Blanton Irvin and was retired maintenance man with Burlington in Ranlo. Mr. Blanton was a veteran of the US Army, life member of American Legion Post #100 where he prepared many meals for his fellow Legion members and operated the concession stand for Post #100 baseball games. Benny was honored in 2008 with his induction into the NC American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers Walter, Charles, and Ralph Blanton.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years Mozelle Poole Blanton, son David W. “Herb” Blanton and wife Betty, of Cherryville, grandson David Keith Blanton and wife Christina of Cherryville grandson Chase Blanton of Cherryville, great grandchildren Jayden and Ja’Mya Blanton and his watch dog Copper.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 PM at Cherryville Missionary Methodist Church with Rev. Bobby Holtsclaw and Dr. Vince Hefner officiating with burial in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday at Carpenter’s Funeral Home from 6-8 PM and at other times at the home.
