Alton Randy Champion, 68, of 313 West Second St., died Friday March 5, 2010 at Peak Resources, Cherryville.

 He was born in Cleveland Co. on August 15, 1941 a son of the late Alton Baker and Mildred Nadine Carpenter Champion. Randy was a member of the Second Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School  teacher, bus driver, groundskeeper, choir member, and custodian. He was also a member of the Western Piedmont Umpires Association and umpired numerous Middle, High School and American Legion games.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first two wives, Vickie Patterson Champion and Linda Bivens Champion.

 Survivors include his wife Janice Elizabeth Pruett Champion, five sons and daughter-in-laws, Eddie and Bonnie Champion of Lincolnton, William Allen and Jenny  Champion of Cherryville, Gary and Sandra Champion of Dallas, Mark and Beth Champion of York, SC and Bradley and Miranda Champion of Bessemer City, one sister Sylvia Meade of Casar, eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

 Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 PM at Second Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Staton officiating with burial in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:30- 8 PM at Carpenter’s Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church, 201 Houser St., Cherryville, NC 28021
